The fly ash from a coal-fired boiler is delivered to a row of hoppers and as it falls out of these hoppers it is mixed with water by water spraying devices (6). The mixture of ash and water slides along a chute (3) into a mixing chamber (K) which forms part of a tank (M) which may receive slag from a chute (4). - Some of the water in the ash-water mixture is recirculated by a pump (2) to the water spraying devices (6) whilst the residual ash-water mixture is removed by a pump. The volume of the recirculated part lies between twice and thirty times the volume of the mixture removed by the pump (9).
