Abstract

Conventional casting technology involves cooling of molten materials in moulds. Crystallisation and solidification is associated with cooling. The specific volume of cooling melts diminishes, but provided that volumes are replenished, castings will retain the shape of their mould. Conventional casting methods are inoperable under weightless space conditions since melts cannot be poured into mould cavities and shrinking volumes cannot be made up. - It is necessary therefore to produce shapes in solid form first, by know methods. Shaped solids are provided with a heat resistant coating i.e. shell. - New material structure is developed during consecutive melting and cooling of the material in the shells. This process eliminates deformations due to changes in specific volume.
