Abstract

The essence of one version of the method according to the invention is that (a) sugar beet (21) or pieces of sugar beet (26) are macerated; (b) extract juice (38) from the macerated sugar beet (30) mechanically; and (c) membrane filtering the separated juice (38) to produce retentate (50) and permeate (48). Extraction of the juice (38) is carried out on a moving porous vacuum filter belt with the counterflow of the macerated sugar beet (30) and water (34). The pH value of the vacuum-extracted juice (38) can be adjusted to at least 7 by adding sodium hydroxide. This version of the sugar extraction process does not use the traditional sugar beet diffusion. Furthermore, in this variant of the process there is no need to contact the juice (38) or the permeate (48) with lime or carbon dioxide.
