Abstract
Nematic liquid crystal mixtures containing 4-(3',5'-difluoro-phenoxycarbonyl)-bicyclohexyl compounds and 4-(2',6'-difluorophenylethynyl)-biphenyl compounds. Nematic liquid crystal mixtures contain compound(s) of formula (I) and compound(s) of formula (II): R<1>, R<2>, R<2> asterisk = optionally fluorinated 1-12C alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl or alkenyloxy, in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by -O-, -CH=CH-, -CO-, -OCO- or -COO- with no direct link between oxygen atoms; Y = F, Cl, OCF3, OCHF2 or OCHFCF3. An Independent claim is also included for TN or STN liquid crystal displays with two base plates (plus an edge) forming cell, nematic liquid crystal mixture with positive dielectric anisotropy ( DELTA e) in cell, electrode layers with orientation layers on inside of base plates, an angle of 0-30 degrees between base plates and long axis of molecules on their surface, a liquid crystal mixture twist angle of 22.5-600 degrees from orientation layer to orientation layer and nematic liquid crystal mixture containing: (A) liquid crystal compound(s) with DELTA e value of more than +1.5 (15-75 wt.%); (B) compound(s) with DELTA e of -1.5 to +1.5 (25-85 wt.%); (C) compound(s) with DELTA e of less than -1.5 (0-20 wt.%); and (D) optionally an optically active component in amounts such that ratio between layer thickness (baseplate spacing) and natural pitch of chiral liquid crystal mixture is 0.2-1.3, in which liquid crystal mixture contains at least one compound of formula (I). Component (A) contains at least one compound (I) and component (B) contains at least one compound (II).
