Abstract

The invention comprises a porous ceramic material consisting of a concretion of granules having an average diameter of 5 to 100 m with pores between the granules having an average diameter substantially the same as that of the granules, each granule being constituted by the agglomeration of micrograins having an average diameter of 0.01 to 0.02 m , and its preparation by compacting micro-grains as defined above and heating to incipient fusion to form a porous product, crushing the product to produce a granular material having a porosity of at least 50% by volume, dry-mixing substantially equal volumes of the granular material and a carbohydrate filler which is substantially thermally decomposable to gaseous products at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the refractory material, forming a shaped article from the dry mix and heating this to eliminate the filler substantially completely, and then sintering at 1350 DEG to 1600 DEG C. Ceramic materials specified are alumina, magnesia, spinel, beryllium oxide and zirconia. Carbohydrate fillers specified are starch, flour, sugar and saccharose. The product may be coated with a film of refractory material, for example alumina, by pre-heating the article to about 400 DEG C. and spraying thereon a layer of about 0.5 mm. of refractory material.
