Abstract

[Also in Division A4] Two members 5, 14 of a collapsible bed or the like are pivoted on respective hinge shafts 3, 4 to a third member 1 for movement between a collapsed condition, in which the members lie adjacent and substantially parallel to one another, and the operative condition shown, the member 5 having a toothed portion 6 co-operating with a spring biased pawl 7 on the member 1, and the member 14 being locked in the operative condition by the engagement of a recess 15 therein with an arcuate portion 11 carried by the member 5, the arcuate portion being so shaped at 13 that when the member 5 is folded against the member 1 the member 14 is free to move between its folded and operative positions. Preferably the member 5 is pivoted between the arms of a bifurcated portion of the member 14 and carries an arcuate portion 11 on each side to engage in recesses 15 in the arms. When the member 5 is rotated into its folded position a cam 17 thereon abuts the pawl 7 and tilts the latter into an inoperative position clear of the teeth 6, in which position it is held by the spring 8 which acts on the pawl through a ball 9. Subsequent rotation of the member 5 into its extreme position brings a cam 10 thereon into contact with the pawl which snaps back into engagement with the teeth. The arcuate portions 11 are formed on metal discs 12 fixed to the member 5: in a modification the metal discs have rims which overlap the parts of the member 14 adjacent the recesses 15.
