Abstract

A nut runner comprises an air motor 25 supplied with air through a passage 29, a finger actuated valve 30, and a reversing valve 31, the air being exhausted through a passage 35 controlled by a spring-urged piston valve 98. Motor 25 drives an impact mechanism 39 through splines 43, and mechanism 39 drives a spindle 41, the latter having internal helical splines which co-operate with similar splines 50 on a socket 45. A cylinder 51 in a bore 47 of spindle 41 is spring-urged away from the latter, and a piston assembly 55 having a spring-urged ball valve 57 is slidable in cylinder 51. A pushrod 62 extends through the motor and cooperates with a spring-urged piston 72 slidable in a sleeve 66 for controlling supply of air to valve 98. The tension in spring 81 is adjustable by nuts 84, 90, and screw 87. In operation, valve 30 is opened, motor 25 drives spindle 41 through mechanism 39, and socket 45 tightens the nut. When rotation is resisted socket 45 moves axially relative to spindle 41, and as space 110, as well as bore 47, and the interior of piston assembly 55, are filled with hydraulic fluid, an hydraulic force moves assembly 55 and rod 62 to the left. Rod 62 moves piston 72 to the left, which permits air flow through passage 108, chambers 69 and 104, and through passage 106, to act upon piston 100, to close valve 96 and thus stop motor 25. In a modification, Fig. 8, socket 130 is fixed to a driven member 127, the members being fixed axially by a flange 125 and a ring 129. Relative movement between member 127 and spindle 114 to actuate rod 63 being possible by providing a space 120. In operation, when the nut is tightened only spindle 114 moves axially to the right in Fig. 8, and the motor is shut off. Specification 919,242 is referred to.
