Abstract

Polymers of non-gaseous monomers of the formula <FORM:0999872/C3/1> where R1 is hydrogen or an organic radical, and R2 is an organic radical, are made by effecting the polymerization in the presence of air, and a catalyst consisting of benzoquinone and an alkyl aluminium compound of the formula <FORM:0999872/C3/2> in which R is alkyl, R1 is H, Cl, or alkyl, and R11 is H or alkyl. The alkyl aluminium compound may be complexed with a saturated or unsaturated ester of a monocarboxylic acid. The polymerizable mix may contain a maleic anhydride-type polymerization inhibitor. The Specification includes an extensive list of suitable monomers selected from acrylates, methacrylates, styrenes, vinyl esters, and vinyl ethers. Mixtures of monomers may be copolymerized. Exemplified catalysts are mixtures of di-isobutyl aluminium hydride complexed with butyl acrylate and benzoquinone with and without maleic anhydride.
