Abstract

1443394 Polymerizing ethylene LEUNAWERKE "WALTER ULBRICHT" VEB 23 Sept 1974 [18 Feb 1974] 7330/74 Heading C3P Ethylene is polymerized or copolymerized in a multi-stage tubular reactor in which the first stage consists of a plurality of tubular reactors in parallel the effluents from which are either (a) passed through parallel tubular second stage reactors and then mixed or (b) mixed and passed through a single second stage reactor. Further monomers may be added at the second stage. Examples use as comonomers vinyl acetare, vinyl acetate/N-isopropylacrylamide, butyl acrylate in one first stage and methacrylic acid in another, methyl methacrylate in one first stage (ethylene alone in the other) with methacrylic acid in a single second stage, vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride and vinyl acetate/ glycol diacrylate.
