In scissors each half comprises a cutting assembly consisting of a metal cutting blade mounted on a resilient plastic blade holder provided with a finger loop, and the blade of one or each assembly is anchored at one end to the support and is adjustably secured at its other end to the scissors to tension the blade so that the plastic holder bends to press the cutting blades together. As shown in Fig. 3, hand nuts 34, 35 coact with toothed projections 36, 37 at the inner ends of metal blades 38, 39 to tension the blades and a spring metal lever 44 is held at one end by the pivot pin, is pressed under tension into a recess 47, and is secured to the outer end of the holder by riveting or by the detachable engagement of a projection 44b in a recess 46. In modifications, a fixed metal cutting blade is moulded or riveted in a recess in a plastic holder and a detachable blade, which may be double-edged and reversible, tensioned in a recess in its holder by the engagement of apertures in the blade on studs on either of the holders. The tensionable blade may be hollow-ground as shown in Fig. 9, the studs having undercut faces. In further modifications, the stud-engaging apertures are wider at one end than at the other, the tensioning is effected by a movable member having a stud to engage the tensionable blade and a serrated end or ends to engage a hand but inset in the handle associated with the other blade, or, as shown in Fig. 16, by a toothed formation of the pivot pin engaging a serrated slot. As shown in Fig. 20, the camming action of the end of a fixed metal blade on a bolt 89 attached by a knob 90 to the tensionable blade forces a nut back into a recess in the holder to tension the blade.
