Abstract
The invention comprises androstanes of the formula <FORM:0999225/C2/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical, R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical of up to 6 carbon atoms or an acyl radical, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl radical, R3 represents a hydrogen or fluorine atom and R4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl radical of up to 3 carbon atoms, and a process for the preparation of 1a -hydroxy-3-keto-androstanes by the reductive splitting of the oxido ring in 1a ,2a -oxido-3-keto-androstenes by an alkali or alkaline-earth metal in liquid ammonia or in a primary or secondary amine. The process may be carried out in the presence of alcohols or other inert solvents, suitably between - 100 DEG and 100 DEG C. Compounds containing free hydroxy groups may be esterified or etherified. 1a ,2a - Oxido - 3 - keto - androstanes may be prepared from the corresponding D 1-steroids by treatment with a per-acid. Therapeutic compositions with anabolic, androgenic and antioestrogenic properties, which may take the form of tablets, dragees, ointments, creams, solutions; suspensions and emulsions for enteral, topical and parenteral application; comprise androstanes of the formula I and suitable carriers.
