Abstract
Organic solvent-soluble coating and impregnating agents, for hydrophobing porous and fibrous materials (see Division D1), are made by mixing together (1) 70 to 99 parts (by wt) of a polysiloxane of the formula <FORM:0999122/C3/1> wherein R and R1 are alkyl or aryl radicals, at least half the radicals being methyl radicals, and x has a value such that the viscosity of the siloxane is between 103 and 107 cst. at 20 DEG C, (2) 1 to 30 parts of a polysiloxane of the formula <FORM:0999122/C3/2> wherein one of the R11 radicals in at least 3 siloxane units is H and the remaining radicals are methyl or phenyl, and n is greater than 1 but less than 3, and (3) 50 to 500 parts of an alkyl titanate or polytitanate, and allowing the 3 components to react at a temperature between room temperature and 150 DEG C until the evolution of gas has ceased The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of an inert organic solvent. In Example (1), a hydroxy-terminated dimethylpolysiloxane, a methylhydrogensiloxane, butyl orthotitanate and toluene were mixed together and heated at 50 DEG C until evolution of hydrogen had ceased, then dry air was passed through the dark coloured solution to restore the pale yellow colour of the solution.ALSO:Impermeable surfaces, e.g. of glass, ceramics and synthetic resins, and paper, are rendered hydrophobic by coating them, as by dipping, spraying or brushing, with an organic solvent (e.g. toluene or white spirit) solution of the reaction product of (1) a hydroxy-terminated organopolysiloxane, (2) a siloxane containing silicon-bonded hydrogen, and (3) an alkyl orthoor poly-titanate, in certain proportions (see Division C3). Films are formed when thin layers of the reaction products are exposed to the atmosphere.ALSO:Fibrous and other porous materials, e.g. textiles, leather, paper, asbestos cement products and structures made of mortar, bricks, artificial stone and plasterwork, are rendered hydrophobic by applying thereto, as by dipping, spraying or brushing, an organic solvent solution of the reaction product of (1) a hydroxy-terminated organopolysiloxane, (2) a siloxane containing silicon-bonded hydrogen, and (3) an alkyl ortho- or poly-titanate, in certain proportions (see Division C3). Examples describe the treatment of (1) leather and cotton with solutions of the above reaction products in toluene diluted with petroleum ether, and (2) bricks, paper and leather with a white spirit solution of the above reaction product.
