Abstract

A composition for coating surfaces comprises (a) an elastomer-forming siloxane, (b) vinyl-tri-(methoxyethoxy) silane and (c) a vulcanisation catalyst, (b) and (c) each being present, e.g. in amount of 0.1 to 10% by weight of the siloxane. The siloxanes specified may contain alkyl, alkenyl or aryl radicals and terminal -OH groups. Catalysts (c) are the conventional organic peroxy compounds. Fillers, e.g. Al2O3, Tio2, ZnO, C, FeO3, CaCo3 and Sio2 (fume), pigments and diluents, e.g. benzene and white spirit, may also be added. Examples are given.ALSO:The adhesion of coatings, based on elastomer-forming organopolysiloxanes, to solid surfaces is increased by effecting the adhesion in the presence of an organic perixidic vulcanization catalyst and vinyltri (methoxyethoxy) silane. The mixture of the catalyst and silane may be applied to the surface prior to the application of the siloxane coating or used directly in admixture with the siloxane coating composition, which may contain conventional fillers, pigments and siloxane solvents (see Division C3). Surfaces specified are glass fibres and slabs, metal housings, ceramic objects and electrical conductors (copper). In examples, the above composition is used for coating (1) glass fabric, which after dipping in a toluene dispersion of the composition (containing fume silica) is covered with mica flakes, and again coated with the composition; (2) sheets of tin plate by the use of a squeegee; and (3) aluminium sheet.
