Abstract

Aqueous slurries of alkaline earth metal hydroxides, in which the hydroxide has a Blaine surface area (ASTM C204-55) of at least 20,000 sq. cm. per g., are obtained by slaking the alkaline earth metal oxide in water above 4 DEG C. using a ratio of up to 16.6 parts of water per part of oxide.ALSO:Oxiranes which are capable of being volatilized by steam are prepared by contacting a halohydrin, which is water-soluble at least to the extent of 0.3% by weight, with an aqueous slurry of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, the said hydroxide having a Blaine surface area of at least 2000 sq. cm. per g. Suitable halohydrins are those containing 2-6 carbon atoms, particularly glycerol dichlorohydrins, especially in dilute aqueous solution, e.g. 1-10% by weight, such as are obtained by contacting an olefin with chlorine gas in an aqueous medium. The preferred hydroxide is calcium hydroxide. The reaction may be effected by contacting the aqueous slurry of hydroxide with an aqueous solution of the chlorohydrin to form the feed for a distillation column in which the feed is countercurrently contacted with steam to form and remove the oxirane. Examples describe the preparation of epichlorhydrin, propylene oxide and a mixture of propylene and ethylene oxides.
