A facing unit for a wall or floor comprises a strip of material such as plywood, provided on its two side edges with a wavy formation extending over a fraction of the thickness of the material and with a straight line formation extending over the remainder of the thickness, so that tongues 6 and recesses 5 suitable for interlocking are provided. The unit is formed by making a straight groove in a shaft of the material and then by separating the material into strips by cutting a wavy groove. A tongue or a recess may also be provided at the end edges of the strip and, in use, each strip is secured to an under-surface with adhesive or by pins passed through the tongues.
