Abstract

C3 and C4 polyolefines are recovered free of aluminium chloride complex from a polymerization process in which one or more C3 and C4 olefines are polymerized with aluminium chloride catalyst whereby a polyolefine is formed in admixture with aluminium chloride-hydrocarbon complex, the mixture is settled to remove a major portion of the complex, the residual mixture is treated with anhydrous ammonia to form an aluminium chloride-ammonia complex which is then settled out. The olefines may be a butylene, e.g. isobutylene, or propylene and may contain a butane. The olefine may be contacted with the aluminium chloride at 0-80 DEG F., the aluminium chloride-hydrocarbon complex may be separated in a first settling zone and the ammonia complex separated in a second settling zone, and the effluent from the second settling zone may be fractionated to remove unreacted hydrocarbons from the polyolefine.
