Abstract

An X-ray contrast composition comprises barium sulphate in intimate admixture with a protective colloid which renders an aqueous acidic suspension of the contrast composition stable and thixotropic, said protective colloid consisting of at least one water-soluble homoglycan which is partially esterified with sulphuric acid or at least one water-soluble homoglycan which has carboxyl groups, some of which are esterified with an alkylene glycol. The homoglycan is a polysaccharide in which all the monosaccharide units are of the same type. The protective colloid may be alginic acid partially esterified with an alkylene glycol, e.g. propylene glycol, or galactans from red algae containing 0,07 to 1 mol. of sulphuric acid per galactose unit and having an intrinsic viscosity of 4. Dispersing agents, e.g. a salt of citric acid, a phosphoric acid or a polyalkylaryl sulphonate, preservatives and flavouring agents may be present.
