Abstract
In a continuous process for making a liquid organic polysilicate from a silicate obtained by reacting a silicon halide with an anhydrous water-miscible alcohol, the silicate is hydrolysed and condensed by water in the presence of a water-miscible alcohol to form a reaction product that is allowed to form 2 layers, and the lower layer containing the polysilicate is separated from the upper layer comprising excess alcohol, the upper layer being reacted with additional silicon halide with subsequent repetition of the hydrolysis procedure. Alcohols specified are methyl, ethyl, n- and iso-propyl, butyl, hexyl and iso-amyl alcohols and diethylmethyl carbinol. The silicon halides include alkyl and aryl trihalosilanes as well as SiCl4 and SiBn4. The process is preferably effected at 10 DEG to 70 DEG C. Examples are given of the above preparation of (1) ethylpolysilicate, and (2) isopropylpolysilicate. Specification 722,425 is referred to.
