Abstract

998,060. Welding by fusion. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 5, 1962 [July 13, 1961], No. 25485/61. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H5] Fusion welding is effected by the heating effect of electrons derived from a gas plasma generator and concentrated on the work by connecting the work to an electric potential, the work being disposed outside the turbulent influence of the gas plasma jet. Wires 1, 2 the ends 3 of which are to be welded are inserted in an open-ended tube 12 projecting into a quartz tube 10 connected through a passage 11 to a vacuum pump. A gas plasma generator 7 having an inner electrode 8 and a two-part annular electrode 9a, 9b is supplied with argon which issues through a constriction 9c in the electrode 9b. A potential of say 120 volts is connected across the electrode 9b and the wires 1, 2 with the latter as anode to concentrate electrons on the wires 1, 2. In a modification, a cap 14 is welded to a tube 13 while rotating the tube 13. Electrons from the generator 7 pass through a quartz tube 17 having a constricted outlet 16 aligned with the seam to be welded.
