Abstract

Formaldehyde of high purity is obtained by contacting crude formaldehyde gas at a temperature above 80 DEG C., if desired, together with a hydrocarbon of high boiling-point with an alkylene glycol polyether having a molecular weight of 300-5000 in a scrubbing operation in which the alkylene glycol polyether is the scrubbing agent, the alkylene glycol polyether having at least one hydroxy group and being optionally modified by replacing the oxygen atom in the polyether chain with a sulphur atom a nitrogen atom or an acetal group of formula <FORM:0997561/C2/1> in which R is hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group. Suitable glycol polyethers are, for example, an o ,o 1-dihydroxy ethylene glycol polyether having a molecular weight of 1550 and an o ,o 1 - dihydroxy propylene glycol - 1,2-polyether having a molecular weight of 2000. The scrubbing liquid can be regenerated by treatment with ion-exchange resins.
