Abstract
N-Alkylhydroxylamines are prepared by hydrogenating a nitroalkane containing 1-3 carbon atoms in the presence of at least one equivalent of sulphuric acid for each equivalent of nitro-alkane at a temperature no higher than 50 DEG C. and in the presence of a catalyst comprising platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, indium or osmium, or an oxide of one of these metals, A chelating agent may be present during the hydrogenation. The N-alkylhydroxylamine is initially obtained as its sulphate from which the free base may be obtained by conventional processes. Examples are given. The N-alkylhydroxylamines, as such or after alkylation at the oxygen atom, may be reacted with isocyanates to give substituted ureas, an example being the production of 1 - (3,4 - dichlorophenyl) - 3 - methyl - 3-methoxyurea from N - methyl - O - methyl-hydroxylamine and 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate.
