[Also in Division G4] An intruder detection system comprises two coaxial or closely spaced beams, one of electromagnetic radiation, and one of acoustic radiation propagated along the boundary to be protected. As described a common focusing system is used employing a mirror 14 with its front surface 15 shaped to reflect radiations received from an ultrasonic transducer 16, and its rear surface 18 silvered and shaped to focus light from the light source 19. The secondary mirror 17 has its front surface 20 shaped to reflect the acoustic wave from transducer 16, and at the same time be transparent to light from source 19. The radiations may be modulated. A comparator may be provided to measure the delay between detection of the optical and acoustic cut-offs due to an intruder interrupting the compositer beam, so that his position along the beam may be determined. The acoustic and optical sources may alternatively be situated at the same point, Fig. 2 (not shown), and may comprise for example a spark gap.
