[Also in Division B8] A wrapper as shown in Fig. 2 and as described in Specification 934,523, primarily intended for wrapping bacon, is sealed to form a flat package by folding front and rear walls 13, 11 into face-to-face relationship, applying successively heat and pressure adjacent heat-sealable edges 16, 17 while the wrapper is moved along a predetermined path, re-orientating the wrapper through substantially 90 degrees in its own plane, and successively applying heat and pressure adjacent heat-sealable edge 18 during continued movement of the wrapper. The machine shown in Fig. 16 comprises a shoot 241, a main conveyer 240, an infeed auxiliary conveyer comprising spaced belts 262, 263 and an out-feed auxiliary conveyer comprising belts 281, 282. A wrapper having its front wall 13 uppermost and folded on to rear wall 11 is fed fold 14 first into the shoot 241 and is held flat between conveyer 240 and the infeed auxiliary conveyer while edges 16, 17 pass through longitudinal slots in heaters 242, 243 and thereafter between pressure applying fluting rollers 245, 246. A camming surface 273 on a vertical flange 272 causes a 90 degrees rotation of the wrapper to bring edge 18 within a longitudinal slot in a heater 244 as the wrapper is continuously moved forwardly by conveyer 240 and the outfeed auxiliary conveyer. Pressure is applied to edge 18 by fluting rollers 258 and 259 (not shown). If the wrapper is provided with a flange 19, a folding mechanism 290 (Figs. 3-5, not shown) is positioned before heater 244 to fold the flange on to front wall 13. In a modification, two main conveyers with their associated auxiliary conveyers are placed at right angles to one another (Fig. 1, not shown). In this case edges 16 and 17 are sealed during movement of the wrapper on one main conveyer and the wrapper is drawn off at right angles to its first direction of movement by the second main conveyer to effect sealing along edge 18. The auxiliary conveyers in both embodiments are each rotatable as a unit about their driving shafts (shafts 261, 283, Fig. 16) to facilitate inspection and maintenance of the main conveyers. An indicia-providing or dating mechanism (Figs. 8-10 not shown), may be incorporated with the outfeed fluting rollers.
