Abstract

C1- 3-chlorohydrocarbon solvents, especially methylene chloride, methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and particularly tri- or perchlorethylene, are stabilised by the inclusion of 0.001-1%, preferably 0.005-1%, by weight of picric acid. The composition suitably also includes 0.01-5% of another nitro aromatic compound (e.g. those referred to in the main Specification), the preferred compounds being 2,4 - dinitrotoluene, 3,5 - dinitrobenzoic acid and 2,4-dinitrocumene.ALSO:Metal surfaces, e.g. of stainless steel, may be simultaneously degreased and phosphatized by employing a C1- 3-chlorohydrocarbon solvent, especially methylene chloride, methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and particularly tri- and per-chlorethylene which contains 1-10% of a C3- 8-aliphatic alcohol, preferably butyl or amyl alcohol, and/or an acid C3- 8-alkyl phosphate ester, 0.05-7.5%, preferably 0.2-0.8%, phosphoric acid, and, as a stabilizer, 0.001-1%, preferably 0.005-1%, by weight of picric acid. The composition suitably also includes 0.01-5% of another nitro aromatic compound (e.g. those referred to in the parent Specification), the preferred compounds being 2,4-dinitrotoluene, 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid and 2,4-dinitrocumene, and generally contains at least 85% of the solvent.
