Abstract

Coal gas is purified by passing it with a gasifying agent, e.g air or steam, at 700 DEG to 1300 DEG C. over a cracking catalyst, e.g. a metal oxide and/or sulphide of an element of Group 6, 7 or 8 of the Periodic Table. The preferred temperature is 900 DEG C., and, where steam is the gasifying agent, the crude gas may contain enough steam, namely 0.3 to 0.8 kg./Nm3, for the cracking step. The process transforms most of the impurities (ammonia, tar, organic sulphur compounds, various hydrocarbons) into gases which need not be removed, but acidic impurities (H2S, HCl) must be removed before or after cracking by any known method and residual water is removed from the cracked gas. Two examples are described for purifying coke oven gas, one employing a nickel-tungsten-sulphide catalyst, and the other, after pretreatment at 300 DEG C. with a zinc oxide catalyst, a nickel and aluminium oxide catalyst for the cracking.
