A steam turbine comprises a rectangular boxlike casing having a removable lid and a rotor extending with its axis horizontal through an opening in each end wall of the casing, each opening having a removable cover and extending vertically upwards from the region where the rotor extends through the wall to a point below the top of the casing and being of such a height that the rotor or a separable end section thereof can be raised vertically until the parts of the rotor clear the fixed lower halves of the turbine diaphragms and then moved axially and tilted to be withdrawn upwardly through an opening in the top of the casing normally closed by the lid. A rectangular steam turbine casing 1, Fig. 1, has an opening 3 in the top and an opening 9 in each end wall 7. Support brackets 51 are welded to the casing 1. The rotor shaft 11, Fig. 2, extends outwardly through the openings 9 and is supported on pedestal bearings 19. Plates 10 with extensions 10A close openings 9. Top opening 3 is closed by a lid 5. The bottom of casing 1 is open for steam to exhaust to a condenser or may be closed with condensers provided within the casing on one or each side of the rotor. An inner casing 17, split into upper and lower halves, carries split stator diaphragms. In a modification, Fig. 6, the rotor comprises two coupled sections 13A, 13B including central bearings 33 enclosed by trunking 37 which is clamped at its upper end to lid 5. Only one central bearing may be provided and an outer bearing 19 may be omitted and the end of rotor shaft 11 supported by an adjacent shaft to which it is coupled. Rotor 13 or rotor sections 13A, 13B can be withdrawn by removing lid 5, end covers 10, 10A, the tops of trunking 37, inner casings 17 and the bearings, unbolting the shaft couplings and lifting the rotor section vertically to clear the fixed lower diaphragms and then moving the rotor axially and tilting it, if necessary, to be withdrawn upwards through opening 3. The construction may be applied to turbines having three or more rotor sections within casing 1.
