JEFFERSON M. SHARP, or 011.. CITY, PENNSYLVANIA, nssrcNon T NATIONAL TRANSIT BUMP 8c MACHINE -PENNSYLVAN IA.
CO., OF 01].- CITY, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PUMP cYtINnnn AND mouNrrrH REFon.
Applicationfiled 0ctoner26, 1928. Serial No. 318,257.
This invention relates toa pump cylinder-- and a mount or support therefor, whereby a pump suitable for pumping hot fluids, and more particularly hot petroleum through the 5. cracking coils, stills, etc. of a cracking plant,
is produced. v As theart of cracking oils to produce gasoline is at present, practiced very high temperatures are imparted to the oil, a temperature of 1000 F. being common. I Heretofore pumps employed in this service have their cylinders supported by a base or foot which is attached to the bottom wall of the cylinder, or is integral therewith, and because of this method biatta'chment, the expansion of the cylinder due tothe heat of the oil being pumped. has all been in the upward direction, with the exception of that portion of the expansion which takes place longitudinally of the cylinder...
r This vertical, .or upward expansion'distorts the alinement of the pump organiza- Fig. 3 is an elevation of my improved cylinder-supporting base,
Fig. 4 is anend elevation of'an assembly of my'improved pump cylinder'and its support.v
.Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my improved cylinder.
: In said drawings, the pump cylinder is indicated by the numeral 1; 2 is the supporting base consisting of a unitary structure upon which said cylinder is mounted; 3 is' the steam engine cylinder from which power i s-derived for the operation of the pump; 4, 4 are the tie rods whereby'the pump cylinder is connectedto tlie'steam cylinder; 5 and 6 are ,thepump plungers; 7 and 8 are Watercooled stufling boxes for said plungers; 9
and 10 are crossheads for the pump plungers and 11 and 12 are cross-head guides.
Referring especially to Fig. 4, it is pointed .out that on each lateral face-of the pump cylippler l and at a location Which .alines,
tion and throws the axiah'lin'ejof"trigflmfg ransyersely of the cylinder, exactly wi h the of the pump cylinder uswaiarimsfgreaaya center Ff the .bore 13iof said cylinder, is
interfering with the eflic'ient operation of the pump and increasing its power requirement, also the wear upon the packing injthe stuffing boxes.
It is the object, therefore, of this invention to supply a pump cylinfier and a mount or support therefor of such character of construction and assembly that the walls of said cylinder Will be free to expand radially, with "respect to the axis of the bore of the cylinder, in all directions, in such manner that said longitudinal axis'of said bore will always remain a neutral point uneffected by expansion or d ontraction ;.also that the longitudinal expansion and contraction of the 40 pump cylinder may take place without in any way distorting or straining any portion of the pump organization.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one form of construction in which my inventive idea is mechanically embodied and has been found to be perfect in actual operation.
The construction shown in said drawings is substantially as follows:
Fig. 1 is one form of direct-acting steam pump embodying...my invention.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
formed a longitudinally extending seating face or projection 14 which is machined in and integral with the cylinder walls and adapted to seatupon the supporting faces 15, 15 ofthe upwardly projecting'arms 16, 16, of said supporting bases, 2, 2;
It is also pointed out that said cylinder 1 i as considered in relation to the expansion Tea and contraction of said cylinder, remains al- I ways a neutral point relative towhich expansion of the cylinder walls takes place radially in all directions without throwing the axis ofthe bore out of alinement with the co-operating members of the pump organization.
My improved construction also provides for and admits of linear or longitudinal expansionof said pump cylinder but inasmuch as one endof said cylinder is connected means of said tie rods 4 to the adjacent ,end of the steam engine cylinder 3, said linear expansion is in one direction, but this one- 5 vdirection expansion in no way disturbs the tal effect upon t la fluid being pumped, the walls of said cylinaxial alinement of the pump cylinder, neither does it roduce any other detrimenhe pump organization.
' I claim the following: i I
1. The combination of a pump cylinder and a mount therefor constructed and assembled together'in' such manner that the axial line of the bore of said cylinder maintains a' neutral position when,'owing to the heat of eler expand and contract, said construction and assembly comprising a longitudinally extending, outwardly projecting ledge carried 'upon each side of said cylinder with a downwardly disposed seating, cylinder supporting face, which faces are in lateral al'inement in the same horizontal plane with the axis of the bore of said cylinder, and asupporting structure for said cylinder comprising supporting members whereupon said supporting faces seat respectivelyso as to support fsaid cylinder in said manner.
being such that the axial line of the bore of said cylinder is always a neutral point with respect to the expansion of the walls ofsaid cylinder;
a' pump for hot liquids, the combinawee ii 5 tion of a block provided with a cylinder bore and with longitudinally extendingledges one on each side thereof, each ledge having a downwardly disposed seating face colnciding in lateral alinement in the same horizontal plane with the longitudinal axis of said bore, and a unitary supporting struc- 4 ture for said blockhaving upwardly disposed seating faces forsaid seating faces of the block, thus forming amount for said block wherein it is'free to expand radially in all directions from the longitudinal axis of said bore while said axis remains a neutral point. I p
4. In a pump for hotliquids, the combination of a block provided witha cylinder bore and with; longitudinally extendingledges one on each side thereof,.each ledge having a.
downwardly disposed seating face, machined from said block, which seating faces are in the same horizontal plane with the longi- .tudinal axis of said bore, and a unitary supporting structure for said block having alpwardly disposed seating faces for the freception of said seating faces. of said block whereon it is free to expand radially in all directions from the axis of said bore while said axis remains a neutral point.
- 5. In a pump for hot liquids, the combination of a block provided with a'cylinder bore and with longitudinally extending ledges one on'each side thereof, said-ledges being integral with said blockand having each a downwardly disposed seating face, which faces areJin the same horizontal plane with the axis of said cylinder bore, and a supporting structure having corresponding upwardly disposed seating faces, thus forming a mount whereon said block is free to expand radially ,in all directions from the longitudinalaxis of said bore while said axis remains. a neutral point. w
