996, 458. Hygrometric determination of the vapour content of gases. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 2, 1962 [Aug. 3, 1961], No. 29775/62. Headings G1B and G1S. A process for measuring the UF 6 content of a permanent gas by means of a dew-point hygrometer 1 comprises passivating the apparatus by the introduction of C1F 3 or F 2 thereinto and subsequently analysing the UF 6 containing gas in the presence of C1F 3 or F 2 . The measuring head 10 of the hygrometer 1 is totally enclosed and has an inlet 8 and outlet 9 for the gas to be analysed. The head 10 has a gold mirror 2, illuminated by a lamp 11, and a photo-electric cell 13. The mirror is coded by a gas entering at 3 and passing through an electromagnetically operated valve 4, needle valve 5 and heat exchanger 6, the cooling gas leaving at 7. A thermocouple 12 is located behind the mirror 2 and the temperature of the mirror is noted by a recorder 16. The output of the cell 13 is connected to an electronically controlled relay 14 fed from a mains supply 15, the relay 14 receiving signals from the photo-electric cell 13 and controlling the valve 4. The passivation of the apparatus allows formation of a protective fluoride layer and prevents decomposition of the UF 6 , and the introduction of the C1F 3 or F 2 , preferably to give a content two to ten times that of UF 6 in the gas to be analysed, allows continuous regeneration of any UF 6 which may decompose in the head 10 and allows the dew-point measurements to be made continuously on a stream of gas e.g. from stuffing boxes or traps in a uranium enrichment plant. The UF 6 content of the gas can be found from the saturated vapour pressure of UF 6 at the dew-point using an empirical formula.
