Abstract

1,053,238. Analysing carbon in aqueous systems. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 11, 1963 [Oct. 22, 1962], No. 40161/63. Heading B1X. The total carbon content of an aqueous system containing a small amount of highly dispersed carbonaecous matter, is rapidly determined by passing a stream of oxygen at a constant flow rate through a combustion conduit having a heated zone at 700‹ to 1,100‹C. with a gas-permeable diffusing plug at least 1/5 of the distance along the heated zone from the oxygen input end, injecting a predetermined amount of the aqueous system into the oxygen stream within the heated zone on the upstream side of the plug, sweeping the gaseous product through the plug into a cooling zone, removing the condensate from the product stream and sweeping the cooled product to an analyzer for quantitatively determining the CO 2 content of the gaseous product. The diffusing plug is preferably positioned 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the heated zone but in such a position to provide a substantial blanket of oxygen upstream of the plug. The plug which may be 0.5 to 10cm. long and 1 to 4cm. dia., may be constructed of compacted granular or fibrous materials which are inert to oxygen and steam, e.g. quartz wool, quartz chips, sand, pumice and similar siliceous materials, also finely divided transition metals, e.g. Ni, G, MN or Pt; and transition metal oxides, e.g. of Cu, Co, MN, V, Ce or Th. In the specific embodiment ignited asbestos fibres are used. The aqueous system may contain 2 to 500 ppm of highly dispersed carbon aceous matter while the sample volume may be 0.005 to 0.5% of the volume of the heated zone. Preferably the sample is injected into the oxygen stream parallel to the longitudinal axis of the conduit. Details of the combustion conduit dimensions, oxygen stream flow rates and preferred temperatures are given. In an example a conduit of siliceous material is used and a platinum gauze is placed downstream of the plug. The gaseous products may be cooled by either air or water while the CO 2 analyser is preferably an I.R. detector. An apparatus according to the invention and a method of introducing the sample into the combustion zone are disclosed and illustrated with figures. Inorganic carbon present as carbonate may be removed from the aqueous system by acidifying, thus giving the total organic C present. The use of the method and apparatus to analyse carbonaceous matter in polluted water is mentioned. The diffusing plug is said to contain sufficient adsorbed oxygen and stored heat to promote complete oxidation of the carbonaceous matter. agitator 111 scrape the insides of the cooling jacket.
