Abstract

Unburnt combustible waste gas produced in an oxygen top blowing converter is recovered by (a) mixing inert gas such as by-product nitrogen into the waste gas at the beginning of oxygen blowing when the CO content of the waste gas is below a predetermined value, e.g. 20% by volume to increase the gas flow sufficiently to maintain the gas pressure at a positive value and discharging the mixed gas into the atmosphere, (b) stopping the addition of waste gas when the CO content reaches the predetermined value and recovering the unburnt waste gas in a gas holder, and (c) repeating step (a) when the CO content falls below the predetermined value at the final stage of blowing.
