Abstract

995,542. Altering physical properties. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 8, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 4973/62. Heading B3V. A method of modifying at least one of the physical properties, e.g. hardness, strength, creep resistance or stress-rupture life, of a coherent body 10 of crystalline material comprises encasing the body in a jacket 11 made from a material having a higher compressibility, applying hydrostatic pressure in the range 1000-100,000 atmos. to the resulting assembly, releasing the pressure, and repeating the application of pressure at least once before removing the jacket. Semi-conductors, metals and alloys, e.g. ferrous, cobalt and nickel alloys, may be treated, and improvements also obtained in electrical and magnetic properties. Specified casing metals are bismuth, lowmelting point bismuth alloys and cerium, which may be cast around the cam, cylinder, sphere, cube &c. 10. Alternatively, the casing may comprise two halves of a precast body welded about the article, or the article may be cast in the casing or inserted through a hole in the casing, which may be removed by melting. From 3 to 10 pressure cycles may be applied, each lasting at least one minute, or from one hour to one week, and between which the pressure is removed or reduced. Specification 971,712 is referred to
