Abstract

Concentrates which are emulsifiable in water comprise an p emulsifying agent and, as a miticidal agent, a 1,1-bis(halophenyl)-2,2,2-trichloroethanol, dissolved in methyl and/or ethyl oleate. The preferred miticide is 1,1-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trichloroethanol either in pure form or as a technical grade, the latter containing minor amounts of the bis(o-chlorophenyl)- and p,o1-dichloro-diphenyl-isomers. The corresponding bromophenyl and fluorophenyl analogues may also be used, alone or admixed with the chlorophenyl compound. The emulsifying agent is preferably composed of a surface-active ethylene oxide adduct having an average of 15 to 100 ether units and a surface-active oil-soluble alkylarenesulphonate. The ethylene oxide adducts may be those of alkyl mercaptans, long-chained carboxylic acids, higher alcohols, alkylphenols and partially esterified sorbitols or similar polyhydric alcohols. The preferred alkylarenesulphonates are alkylbenzenesulphonates containing at least one C8-C18 alkyl substituent, and also preferred are those sulphonates having calcium or magnesium cations. Alkylnaphthalene-sulphonate salts may also be used. The concentrates may be used in wettable powder formulations by incorporating them in inert, finely-divided solid carriers, e.g. fuller's earth, kaolins, silica, diatomaceous earth, alkaline earth silicates and sodium silico-aluminate. The wettable powders may also comprise dispersing agents, e.g. salts of copolymers obtained from maleic anhydride and olefinic unsaturated hydrocarbons, salts of condensed formaldehyde-naphthalene sulphonates, and sodium or calcium lignosulphonates. Other pesticides may be incorporated in the miticidal compositions, those specified being dinitroalkylphenyl esters of crotonic, acrylic, methacrylic, b ,b -dimethylacrylic and 4-pentenoic acids, 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane, 1,1 - dichloro - 2,2 - bis(p - chlorophenyl)ethane, 1,1 - dichloro - 2,2 - bis-(ethylphenyl)ethane, phosphatic pesticides such as O,O-dimethyl S-(1,2-dicarbethoxyethyl) di-thiophosphate, and 1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate.
