Abstract

A pesticidal composition comprises a plant extract toxic to insects admixed with a water-insoluble, finely divided (particle size 0.01 to 2.0 microns) polymer of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride. A dust may be prepared by dispersing the solids in clay or diatomaceous earth and a spray by dispersing in an aqueous medium with the aid of wetting agents, such as alkyl and aralkyl sulphates or sulphonates, e.g. sodium lauryl benzene sulphonate and dimethyl dilauryl ammonium chloride, with or without the further addition of a solvent. In one example, a solution of rotenone in diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, an acetone solution of dimethyl dilauryl ammonium chloride and an aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl chloride containing a wetting agent are mixed with water to form a spray. The polymer may be replaced by a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidine chloride, a copolymer of either or both with one or other unsaturated compounds such as acryonitrile, styrene, ethylene; esters of acrylic and substituted acrylic acids, e.g. methyl and ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate; vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, e.g. vinyl acetate and vinyl benzoate; dialkyl esters of maleic and fumaric acids. Specified plant extracts are rotenone, pyrethrum, nicotine, hellibore, quassia and ryanex (Ryania plants). The compositions may also include insecticides and fungicides which are not plant extracts.
