In an ironing machine, the two sides of the, article are ironed in turn by respective burnished ironing shoes whilst the other side is supported against respective padded supports together with a conveyer feed belt. In Fig. 1, the article 28 is fed on a conveyer belt 25 and ironed between a fixed upper shoe 12 and a lower support 11 and then between a fixed upper support 18 and a lower shoe 19. The conveyer belt 25 is very thin, perferably made of silk, and may be made in several sections each with the length of one of the padded supports and joined by hooks or clamping means which operate switches in passing to control preliminary operations such as feeding articles to the belt. Automatic control means (e.g. a timer) can be provided. In other embodiments the two ironing units are arranged above one another, the support underneath the shoe in each case, there being a separate conveyer belt for each unit. Both supports may be fixed; or alternatively the upper support may be integral with the lower shoe, the combination either being fixed or being depressible against springs in which case either the lower support or the upper shoe is fixed. Inflatable elastic containers or pressure cylinders may be used for moving pressing members.
