Apparatus for delivering measured quantities of liquid such as milk into a container 40 comprises a supply tank 22, an inlet 30 leading from the tank into a measuring chamber 28, piston means 32 for controlling the flow of liquid into the chamber and valve means 50 controlling the discharge of liquid from the chamber. The measuring chamber 28 is connected to the underside of the tank 22 which is carried by a rotatable housing 42 of a filling machine, the inlet 30 leading from the tank into a cylinder 34 communicating with the chamber. The valve means 50 comprises a closure member 51 pivoted on a sleeve 52 and cooperable with a tubular member 60 normally urged by a spring 59 into the closed position shown in Fig. 3. In operation, liquid is fed from the tank, via the inlet 30, into the cylinder 34 and thence into the measuring chamber 28 where it rises through a port 26, in a cap 26 to the level 21 in the tank. Upon movement of a lever 35 by means of a rotary cam member on the machine, a piston 32 closes off the inlet 30 and, at the same time, displaces some of the liquid in the chamber 28 back into the tank via the port 26. The degree of movement of the piston is controlled, in order to vary the amount of liquid dispensed, by means of a spring - loaded handle 74, 75 which, when lifted, can be rotated to reposition an eccentric shaft coupling the lever 35 to a second lever 37; the latter lever is connected via a shear pin 39, to a lever 46 moved by the rotary cam member. The measured quantity of liquid is dispensed from the chamber by means of the container 40 being raised by a cam-controlled platform 88, 89, 91, 92 so that the top of the container abuts a drip plate 61 secured to the tubular member 60 thereby opening the discharge valve 50; a removable stop plate 58 for the tubular member is provided in order that the degree of opening for the valve may be varied to suit liquids of different viscosities. The machine may be cleaned by filling the tank with a suitable liquid, the machine being operated in the normal way except that the valve 50 is opened by means of a lever 82 attached to the shaft 87 on which the container platform 88 is secured; the lever is normally rotated out of contact with the valve via a pin-and-slot device 94, 95.
