Abstract

1,184,679. Filling containers; container filling machines; dispensing measured quantities of liquids. OLINKRAFT Inc. 21 Dec., 1967 [3 Jan., 1967], No. 58156/67. Headings B8C, B8N and B8T. Containers, e.g. bags 83, each carrying a plug (85), Fig. 6 (not shown), in a neck 84, are presented manually to an opening and filling assembly where each container is opened and moved to a filling nozzle (140), Fig. 7 (not shown), to receive a measured volume of liquid, e.g. milk, from a tank 10 which contains a piston 24 reciprocable to discharge liquid from outlets 63, 66 at opposite ends of the tank. A second filling nozzle and filling and opening assembly is provided under the second outlet from the tank. The piston 24 has a ring 31 capable of sensing a magnetic field from each of two switches 41, 42 and thereby reversing the direction of the piston by energizing a main switch to reverse a liquid valve (70), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the supply pipe to the tank. Liquid is then supplied to the appropriate face of piston 24. The members 41, 42 are adjustable to vary the volume of liquid delivered. Filling operation.-A bag is placed so that two fingers on the end of a capper arm 95 engage the neck 84 under a flange 88; also a flange (86) on the plug engages a groove in a stationary copper plate 92. When a starter button 111 is pressed the capper arm is lowered to disengage the plug from the neck, then rotated and raised so that the neck engages the filling nozzle. After filling the procedure is reversed so that the plug is re-positioned in the neck. Removal from the capper arm is by a kick-off arm (146), Fig. 4 (not shown). Control of the filling operation.-Vertical and rotational movement is via a switch cam plate 120 co-operating with impulse switches 123 and 142 and controlling air-cylinders 106 and 124. After the bag is filled the switch 41 stimulates a filler valve control box 144 and also triggers the return movement of the capper arm. Removal of the bag from the capper arm 95 is by the initiation of a similar cycle at the second outlet activating a kick-off air-cylinder (145).
