Abstract
994, 917. Photo-electric gauging. J. HALLIDAY & SONS Ltd. Jan. 27, 1964 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 40544/62. Heading G1A. In apparatus for detecting variations in the thickness of a moving filament such as yarn or thread, the filament 1 is fed past a longitudinal slot which is illuminated by a lamp 9 so that the response of a photo-resistance 10 depends on the thickness, and, provided the variation from standard persists over a predetermined length of the filament, an indicaton is given and for a control is effected. As shown, a second photo-resistance 29 is illuminated by the lamp 9 through a second slot 30 which may be partially obscured by an adjustable member 31 in accordance with the standard thickness of the filament. The resistances 10, 29 are arrayed in a bridge circuit including a relay 70 of whichthe response is delayed by connecting one or more of a number of capacitors 42... 46 in accordance with the length of non-standard filament that is allowable. The energization of the relay 70 connects up one or other of two lamps 53, 55 and operates an electromagnet 47 which controls a cutter for the filament. An ammeter may be plugged into a jack 71 to indicate the actual current through the relay 70. A modification is described in which the slots are differently disposed in relation to the lamp 9.
