A predetermined number of yarn forming machines, e.g. spinning and twisting machines is combined with apparatus comprising detector means for sensing ends of yarn formed by the machine and operable in response to ends down thereon for signalling the presence of ends down, discriminator means connected to the detector means for receiving the signals therefrom and for distinguishing the signalling of a predetermined number of ends down at a machine side location, and annunciator means connected to the discriminator means and operable in response thereto for informing an operator 'that the number of ends down on a machine side exceeds the predetermined number. The detector means may comprise a feeler having the profile of an M or W, the yarn being positioned in the bifurcated portion, or comprise a pigtail guide. The detector means operating on detection of an end down to close a contact in an electrical circuit which includes resistances of net values, the discriminator means acutating the annunciator means, e.g. an electric lamp, in response to the variable reistance value obtained according to the number of ends down. The detector means is preferably located between the delivery rolls of a drafting roller set and the ring rail of a yarn winding means. The yarn forming machines are arranged in rows with aisles between and preferably also with alleys perpendicular to the aisles; the aisles are formed by opposing machine sides. Each machine side is provided with detector means and the discriminator means may be operable in response to ends down on one machine side or in response to ends down in one aisle, the annunciator means being positioned at the end of each machine side of each side.
