Abstract
994,715. Cylinders. FAIRBANKS, MORSE Inc. Aug. 9, 1962 [Oct. 3, 1961], No. 30588/62. Heading FIB. [Also in Divisions B2 and F2] Irregular pores or recesses 12 in the pistonring engaging wear surface of a cylinder or cylinder liner 9 coated with chromium 10 are filled with finely divided particles of polytetrafluoroethylene bonded together and to the metal surface by a thermosetting resin binder e.g. a phenolic thermosetting resin. The chromium surface is first cleaned in an alkali bath, washed, given an electroetchant treatment in a chromic acid solution, washed again, sprayed with methenol, and dried by an air blast. The surface is then sprayed with a solution of polytetrafluoroethylene particles of an average size less than 1 - micron in a phenolic resin binder, and the resultant coating 11 above the level of the metal surface 20 is then removed by a scraping tool 15, leaving the pores 12 filled.
