A thread sizing machine comprises a prime mover, e.g. or motor 19, to drive the loom beam 18 and at least one other roller, e.g. the drying roller 16, there being provided between the prime mover and beam 18 and the other roller, in addition to the usual variable speed gears 23, 26 a series of change speed gear-boxes 40, 27 whereby the prime mover can be arranged to run in its upper speed range independently of the warp delivery speed. As shown motor 19 also drives squeeze rollers 15 via variable speed gears 26, 30 and a change speed box 31, and delivery rollers 17 via a change speed box 24. Gear-boxes 24, 27, 31 are linked so that the same ratio is selected in each box. At least one supply beam 10, delivery rollers 11, a jockey roller 12,an immersion roll 13 and a bath 14 are also provided. The output shaft of variable speed gear 23 (i.e. that carrying sprocket 38) is provided with an electromagnet or friction slipping clutch whereby the drive to the loom beam 18 is regulated to give constant take up tension in the threads. A differential takes drives from the input and output sides of the clutch and the differential output drive adjusts the clutch pressure or magnet excitation to give constant tension to the threads. The differential output drive also adjusts the ratio of variable speed gear 23 so that a constant 2% slip is maintained in the clutch. Hydraulic or electric motor means is provided to laterally align loom beam 18 and also to move the loom beam chucks for removal or replacement of the beam. Hydraulic rams are provided to control the position of delivery rollers 11, immersion roller 13, squeeze rollers 15 and size bath 14. Examples are given of motor speeds, gear ratios and warp speeds.
