Abstract

In a process for the free radical emulsion polymerization of vinyl alkanoates in the presence of 0.5 to 5 weight per cent of a protective colloid and with gradual addition of the monomer to the polymerization reaction mixture, the polymerization is carried out in two stages at a reflux temperature above 65 DEG C. and below the boiling-point of the aqueous phase and at a temperature rising to between 85 and 95 DEG C. and between these two stages the reaction mixture is cooled to a temperature not exceeding 65 DEG C. and is maintained at such a temperature for at least 30 minutes. Specified vinyl alkanoates are vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate and vinyl butyrate. These vinyl esters may be copolymerized with higher vinyl esters, acrylic esters, maleic diesters, vinyl sulphonic acid, acrylic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid or semi-esters thereof with alkanols or polyglycol monoethers. Cross-linking monomers, e.g. divinyl adipate, vinyl acrylate, vinyl crotonate, allyl acrylate, diallyl phthalate, diallyl maleate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and triallyl cyanurate, may also be present. Specified protective colloids are polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose ethers and alkylaryl polyglycol ethers. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, persulphates or t.-butyl hydroperoxide, optionally together with bisulphites, dithionites, sodium formaldehyde hydrosulphite, formic acid, tartaric acid, ascorbic acid or salts of transition metals. In the first step 20 to 80% of the total monomer may be added and completely polymerized, the mixture being cooled to between 45 DEG and 65 DEG C., e.g. 60 DEG C., for one to two hours. In examples vinyl acetate is polymerized in aqueous media in the presence of (1) polyvinyl alcohol, sodium paraffin sulphonate, calcium chloride and hydrogen peroxide together with (2) tartaric acid.
