Abstract
993,620. Coating apparatus. EMHART CORPORATION. April 7, 1964 [May 1, 1963], No. 14255/64. Heading B2B. A glueing apparatus comprises a nozzle connectible with a source of fluid glue under pressure and has means for selectively permitting and cutting off flow to the nozzle, the nozzle being provided with at least one glue discharge orifice, and means for supporting the nozzle in engagement with a surface to which glue is to be applied but with the orifice spaced slightly from the surface, whereby upon relative movement of the nozzle along the surface, a line of glue can be placed on the surface which line will end abruptly when glue flow to the nozzle is cut off. Preferably the nozzle is provided with an elongated manifold chamber having a plurality of orifices and an elongated spoolshaped plug is disposed in the manifold to confine the flow of glue to a path around it from the source to the orifices. In the embodiment shown a glue nozzle assembly 10 consists of a support arm 16 biased by spring 20 so that the nozzle head 12 normally engages a moist pad 22 associated with reservoir 24. In operation the head 12 is moved to the full line position by the flap F e.g. of a carton to which glue is to be applied. The orifices in the head 12 are so angled that with the head 12 in contact with the flap F there is a small space between the orifice and the flap surface. A valve 14 close to the head 12 controls the flow of glue thereto and has a glue inlet at 30. Flow through the valve is controlled by a spool-like valve member which is supported and moved between open and closed positions by flexing diaphragms moved by compressed air under the control of a solenoid operated pilot valve. The solenoid is operated by feeler contacts in response to the position of flap F passing through the apparatus.
