Abstract

To prevent jamming of the radial seal for the piston of a rotary-piston machine which is rotatably and eccentrically arranged within a cylinder whose contoured surface together with side walls defines an inner space, the radial seal which comprises a sealing strip having clearance within a groove extending the axial width of the piston and a sliding edge parallel to the piston axis for continuous sealing engagement with the contoured surface to seal two adjacent chambers from each other, has the sliding edge of the sealing strip tiltable about an axis parallel to the piston axis which is located in each position of the piston in front of the sliding edge as viewed in the direction of rotation of the piston. Applied to a trochoidal type rotary-piston engine, the sealing strip 6, Fig. 2, loosely mounted in a groove 5 in the corner 8 of a three-sided piston, on rotation of the piston swings through an angle Ï max with respect to the two-lobed epitrochoidal contour 1 .of the cylinder. The invention provides that the sliding edge 7 is tiltable about an axis lying within the arms of an angle a which is the supplement of the angle ° max. with the piston rotating in the direction of the arrow D. As shown in Fig. 3, a recess 10 is provided on the trailing side of the sealing strip 9 and the sliding edge 12 tilts about the base 11 of the recess. In another embodiment, the sealing strip 13a, Fig. 4, mounted in a carrier strip 13 urged outwardly by a spring 17. The sealing strip 13a is bent rearwardly so that its sliding edge 14 tilts about an axis 15 at the leading corner of the carrier strip 13. In a further embodiment, the carrier strip 13<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, is chamfered on its leading edge so that it lies within the groove 5 and its trailing face formed with a recess 28 to which lubricant is supplied through a duct 29. Other embodiments are disclosed in Figs. 6 and 7, not shown.
