Abstract
1473561 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines W H BIBBENS 3 May 1974 [3 May 1973] 19547/74 Heading F1F In a Wankel-type I.C. engine each apex seal blade 124 of the rotor has on its leading side adjacent each end thereof a cam surface 178 on which a projection 195 formed on an arm 196 of an associated coupling seal 122 bears when, owing to friction between a portion 158 of the outer end surface of the coupling seal and the adjacent housing end-plate, the coupling seal pivots about its axis in a direction 52a. The seal blade also has at each end a cam surface 174 engaging with a cam surface 148 on a "retaining member" 120 fixed in the rotor. The pressure of the projections 195 on the surfaces 178 not only urges the seal blade radially outwards to hold it against the inner peripheral wall of the housing but also presses the coupling seals against the housing end-plates and moreover, centres the seal blade relative to the rotor end-surfaces. The seal blade is also urged towards the said wall by a spring 126. Springs 128 bias the coupling seals towards the housing endplates. The retaining member may be dispensed with, a groove for the seal blade and recesses for the coupling seals then being formed directly in the body of the rotor. The seal blade may have pressure-equalizing passages therein, Fig. 14A (not shown). The coupling seals may be modified so as to have projections formed on the leading walls of the seal-blade grooves therein and engaging with respective cam surfaces on the seal blades, the arms 196 being dispensed with, Figs. 23-26 (not shown). To obviate damage due to pressure pulses in the combustion region striking the seal blades the grooves for the latter may be inter-connected by passages in the rotor, Figs. 27-42 (not shown), the excess pressure being relieved through gaps between the seal blades and the groove walls, and the corresponding said passages, to a region at a lower pressure.
