[Also in Division B8] An ornament setting machine comprises a hopper mounted on a base and intermittently rotated for feeding an ornament to a pick-up position means on the base for retaining a level of glue at a glue station means for picking up an ornament and for transferring it to the glue station for the deposit of glue on the bottom and moving the ornament to the assembly position. The ornaments are held in openings 12 and a rotary hopper plate 11 and a cylindrical wall slidable over the plate has a gap 18 through which an ornament pick up head reciprocates. A pawl 23 engaging a ratchet wheel 19 on the plate rotates the plate in steps of three openings. The pawl is connected to an arm 27 reciprocated by a pneumatic cylinder 46. The forward movement of the pawl is limited by a block 28 and rearward movement by a pawl 30, and for correct positioning an L-shaped block 32 engages the teeth. The pick up head is mounted on a block 63 connected to a bar 53, reciprocated by the rod 51 of a cylinder 50, over a shaft 56 which engages in three spaced grooves 57, 58 and 59 in the rod so that during rearward movement the rod 53 and the head dips as the shaft enters each groove, to pick up an ornament, to dip the ornament in the glue, and for an operator to attach a piece of jewellery to the ornament. The glue dipper 47 is positioned at one end of an arm 41 oscillating on a rod 43 linked to the arm 27 and reciprocating with it. The glue dipper angularly dips into a glue reservoir 37 supplied by an inverted bottle 38 and withdraws filled with the glue. In operation, the bar 53 moves rearwardly carrying the head and cylinder 65 through the gap 18. Simultaneously the rods 27 and 43 move forwardly rotating the hopper plate and submerging the dipper in the glue. The cylinder 65 picks up a rhinestone, dips the stone in the glue in the dipper and moves to a position where an operator presses the ornament in a setting in jewellery releasing the vacuum in the system and reversing the direction of the arm 53. The switch in the head which is operated by pressing the jewellery against the cylinder operates a solenoid valve 78 to cut off the vacuum supply, alters the flow to blowing momentarily and opens the solenoid valve 77 to exhaust. The pneumatic system is connected to a bleeder valve 82 connected to opposite ends of the cylinders and to a solenoid valve 77. The bleeder valve is controlled by the reciprocation of bar 53 and effects reversal of direction of motion of the cylinders. Alternatively the pieces of jewellery may be automatically fed beneath a multi-cylinder head and the ornaments may be automatically glued by dipping simultaneously into a series of glue dippers.
