Abstract

689,627. Attaching handles &c. to cups. FRYER, A. March 29, 1951 [Dec. 30, 1949], No. 33293/49. Class 87(i) [Also in Groups V, XXIV and XXX] In a machine for trimming and attaching ceramic appendages, e.g. fixing handles to cups, the handles are carried in holders 18a attached to a conveyer 16a which is advanced intermittently, while alongside the conveyer are mounted a trimming device 6, a slip-coating device 8, 46, 47 and a ware carrier 3,'the holders being brought to rest alongside each of these devices successively, means being provided acting to move the holders sideways (i.e. at right angles to the conveyer), so that a handle is first presented to the trimming device and trimmed to conform to the contour of the cup to which it is to be attached, is next presented to the slipcoating device and coated with slip to enable it to .adhere to the cup, and is finally presented to the cup itself and affixed in the desired position. A belt or rope drive applied to pulleys 32 drives a shaft 9 from which are driven a crank and connecting rod 22a, 22; bevel gears 33 and shaft 20, and a crank and connecting rod 10, 11. The connecting rod 11 reciprocates a rack 12 geared to a pinion 14, which therefore rotates in opposite directions alternately. A free wheel device 15 interposed between the pinion 14 and the driving sprockets 16 of the chain conveyer 16a causes uni-directional, and therefore intermittent, drive of the conveyer, The conveyer carries guide blocks 18 in each of which a handle holder 18a is mounted in a slide so that it can be moved sideways, the action for so moving the holder comprising a tappet 35, actuated by a cam 31 on a shaft 34 chain-driven from the shaft 20, Fig. 5, and a rocking arm 36 carrying an adjustable tappet 19 which meets the head of a screw 70 in a holder 18a and moves it sideways, towards the trimming, coating or carrier device, as the case may be, against a return spring 72. The trimming device comprises a flexible wafer blade 7a made to conform to the shape required by a former 7, and is actuated from a cam 40 on the shaft 20 through linkage 41, 42 and plunger 43, 44 being a return spring. The slip coating device comprises a belt 47 which passes into a slip tank 46, Fig. 3, and is intermittently moved by a cam 45 on the shaft 20 which periodically engages with a roller 49 and imparts a slight rotation to it by friction, the roller 49 driving a roller 50 on the shaft of which is one of the rollers over which the belt 47 passes. The belt passes over fixed plates 51 shaped to the handle contour, so that the handle will be evenly coated when it is moved sideways and be ready to be stuck on a cup. The ware carrier 3 comprises a disc on which are four chucks 5 at 90 degrees intervals, the cups being placed on the chucks. The reciprocating connecting rod 22 causes intermittent rotation of the disc (through gearing 54, 55 and 27, 28), by means of a rack and free wheel, similarly to the driving of the conveyer. The disc repeatedly brings a fresh cup into position just before a trimmed and coated handle is presented to it by the cam, tappet and rocking arm mechanism. Means for holding the handle firmly in its holder during the trimming and coating operations is shown in Figs. 11 and 12. An arm 80 shaped at its end 80a to keep the handle in its holder is hinged at 81 to another arm 82 and spring- loaded by a lever spring 83 to press it lightly downwards, positioned against a stop 89, the arm 82 being pivoted at 84 and pressed against a stop 85 by another spring 86 which acts as a return spring after movement of the holder. The arm 80 is raised, as the holder 18a is carried along by the conveyer, by a lug on it riding up a ramp 88, and when the arm is above the handle the lug drops into a recess 88a. A free wheel is described, Fig. 9, in which a member 60, forming the driven member, has two teeth 62 so formed that in one direction of rotation a spring-loaded plunger 63 mounted on the housing 61, which is coupled to the drive, rides over the teeth, but in the other direction engages them and drives the member 60. The movement of the rack gives slightly more than 180 degrees rotation to the pinion to allow' clearance for the plunger 63 to fall behind the teeth 62. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 634,425.
