Abstract

A composition for developing electrostatic images is made by comminuting finely-divided electrically attractable solid optically dense pigment particles, of size between 0.1 and 20 microns, with a solution in an aromatic solvent of one or more resinous binders which are highly soluble in aromatic solvents but not more than slightly soluble in aliphatic solvents, admixing the pigment-resin mixture with an aryl-alkyl compound comprising a benzene nucleus substituted with at least one aliphatic group, and dispensing the resulting mixture in a liquid carrier having an electrical resistivity greater than 109 ohm-cm. and a dielectric constant between 1 and 6. A list of suitable pigments, including metals and inorganic and organic pigments, is given. Other ingredients specified are: resins-phenol-aldehyde resins which may be oil-modified, rosin- and modified rosin-esters; and maleic-alkyd resins; aryl-alkyl compounds-xylene, mesitylene, and ethyl-, n-propyl-, n-butyl-, isobutyl-, n-pentyl- and n-hexyl-benzenes; and carrier liquids-cyclohexane, carbontetrachloride, trichlorotrifluoroethane, cyclopentane, n-pentane, n-hexane, kerosene, mineral oil and silicone oil. Generally the toner particles are admixed with the aryl-alkyl compound made in the above manner from (1) Jet Nigrosine, a phenol-modified pentaerythritol ester of rosin acid, a styrenated alkyd resin, commercial xylene as solvent, n-propylbenzene as aryl-alkyl compound and cyclohexane as carrier liquid, and (2) Solfast Green, a modified maleic rosin, commercial xylene, isobutyl benzene as aryl-alkyl compound and carbon tetrachloride as carrier liquid. Specification 992,692 is referred to.
