Abstract

854,012. Electrophotographic processes. AUSTRALIA, COMMONWEALTH OF. Sept. 24, 1958 [Oct. 1, 1957], No. 30566/58. Class 98(2) Electrically charged pigment particles for developing an electrostatic image are suspended in a non-inflammable carrier liquid consisting predominantly of a liquid chlorofluoro-hydrocarbon. Preferably the carrier liquid is either CC13F or CC12F, CC1F2 or a mixture of these or alternatively a small proportion of xylene can be added to either of them without increasing the fire risk. In the examples, particles of phthalocyanine blue are dispersed in one of these liquids and the particles are subsequently secured to a developed image bearing surface by a fixative spray or boiled linseed oil residue left when the carrier liquid evaporates. Alternatively, the pigment particles may be coated with a resin composition in a ball or roller mill before dispersion in the liquid. One component of the resin is or is made partially soluble so that the coating becomes tacky and secures the particle to the image surface. The other component increases the speed of the development process.
