Abstract

A polyolefin of low impurity content is produced by contacting an olefin monomer under polymerization conditions with a catalyst capable of initiating the polymerization of olefins to form solid polymers and allowing the polymerization reaction to proceed for a period of time sufficient to produce at least 2500 parts by weight of polymer per part by weight of catalyst. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1, styrene, 3-methyl butene-1, 4-methyl pentene-1. Suitable catalysts are mixtures of a preformed partially reduced transition metal halide with an organo-metallic compound. In the examples propylene is polymerized in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst comprising cocrystallized TiCl3/AlCl3 and a heptane solution of Et2AlCl. The reaction is terminated with an isopropanol/hydrochloric acid/water mixture.
