992, 521. Tape drive control circuits. OMNITRONICS Inc. Nov. 23, 1962 [Dec. 7, 1961], No. 44458/62. Heading G5R. [Also in Division H3] A control circuit 10 for controlling the drive and brake in a photoelectric tape reader has the drive capstan and brake circuits connected to emitter followers which are connected into opposite sides of a bi-stable circuit (see Division H3), so that when this circuit is active the capstan drive and brake cannot be applied simultaneously. A switching arrangement 12 allows the various control functions to be exercised. The power switch 20 controls the supply to all power inputs to the circuit. Activation of the start/stop button 23 applies a pulse to the bi-stable circuit to change its condition, and operation of the load/tape-ready switch in the load tape position disables both the capstan and brake drives, whilst in the ready position applies a positive pulse to the base of transistor T1 in the bi-stable circuit to ensure that this is switched off and the brake drive is applied. Electrical inputs can alternatively be applied at the terminals 17-19 for automatic operation of the control circuit. An inhibit output circuit 16 may be included, which applies an inhibiting output to a tape reader (for example) whenever the capstan drive circuit is inoperative. This ensures that read out is not obtained when the tape is being threaded into the reader before it comes under the control of the drive.
